The American Yellowwood is a sought after fragrant and showy American native tree with beautiful white racemes flowers. It is a beautiful native tree with long graceful trunks and flowers around May/ June in USDA Zone 6. The white flowering racemes are quite showy.
American Yellowwood can create one of the most spectacular flower display of any tree species. The blossoms appear in late spring, when numerous fragrant wisteria-like foot-long flower clusters droop from the branches. The mature American Yellowwood tree in full bloom is a stunning sight.
In recognition of its beauty, the species was given the prestigious Pennsylvania Horticultural Society Gold Award in 1994. It is a graceful medium-sized, deciduous tree that typically grows 30-40 feet tall with upright branching and a broad, rounded crown covered with intensely fragrant, wisteria-like flowers in large, drooping, terminal panicles (10-15 inches long) in late spring. Younger specimens grow well in some shade and away from high wind areas. USDA zones 4-8

The Stewartia pseudocamellia, Japanese Stewartia is an absolutely beautiful specimen that flowers from June through early August, and has striking leaves, flowers, and bark. It is one of our favorite trees, and is highly sought after, and quite hard-to-find. This specimen will reward every one who sees it throughout the year. They grow best in mixed sun and shade, especially being shaded from the hot afternoon sun. It is truly an exquisite and colorful tree.This particular specimen is highly recommended! The Quercus rubra or Northern Red Oak is an excellent and very popular wildlife and native tree with many positive attributes including its fast growth, water tolerance, shade production and wildlife food for deer, squirrels, and wild turkey.
Shade Trees
Dawn Redwood is a magnificent deciduous tree. It has gorgeous soft green needles, and is a fantastic and inspiring tree to see and grow. Dawn Redwood is a magnificent deciduous tree, and is a relative of the California redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) and giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum), diverging around 150 million years ago. Dawn redwood prefers a wetter environment to grow, and it needs full sun to grow its best when it is a larger tree. We start these as 'understory' trees and they love the high open canopy above them giving the good indirect light. It does best in moist to wet soils, so it can be a good choice for large rain garden locations. As with all trees a good organic planting location would be ideal for these trees.
