Davidia involucrata – Dove Tree is a rare and highly desirable tree with flower bracts up to 7″ long that flutter in the slightest breeze which from a distance look like white doves sitting in the tree. It has no serious disease or insect problems and it does best in moist organic, well-drained, slightly acid soils in full sun or light shade.
Flowers are followed by round, greenish-brown fruits on 2-3 inch stems. This tree is native to the woodlands in central Asia, and is a deciduous tree that can grow 30-40 feet tall with a broad pyramidal habit. Red-anthered flowers in rounded clusters bloom in April-May. The tree displays gorgeous fall leaf color ranging from pastels to bright oranges and beautiful reds. USDA zones 5-9
