It produces profuse large red berries that persist throughout the winter. It is a slower growing multistem holly which needs a male pollinator to produce the attractive red berries which are the signature beauty of the winterberries. Generally one male winterberry I. verticillata Southern Gentlemen will pollinate 9-10 Winter Red plants. Prune to shape in early spring just before new growth appears. USDA zones 5-9
