Magnolia virginiana – Sweetbay Magnolia grows natively in the southeastern and mid-Atlantic states. In the northern range, it will generally grow up to 20-25′ tall tree in the PA and DE area with a spreading, rounded crown, or as multi-stemmed. This beautiful, luscious and very intriguing tree with silver leaf undersides produces a very sweet fragrance (lemony), 9 petal, creamy white, waxy flowers 3″- 4″ in diameter which appear from May through August. Red cone-like seed pods with bright red seeds mature in early fall. It is deciduous, but may retain many of its leaves over the winter, if in a protected area. It is intriguing, beautiful, and a great wildlife tree attracting song birds. USDA zones 5-9
