Privet is a traditional and very effective hedge shrub that provides quick privacy, especially in an urban area where space might be limited.
Privet has a generally narrow profile and is perfect next to a driveway or roan frontage. You see it a lot on the Philadelphia Main Line and other traditional areas. It is a low maintenance hedge that although deciduous and losing its leaves in the winter, the branch framework still provides considerable screening throughout the winter months.

Ligustrum ovalifolium is commonly grown as a formal or informal hedge or screen. Its full size is 10′ – 12′ if allowed to grow. It has smaller white flowers in June, and can easily be sheared and can be kept as a formal 3′ – 4′ hedge, or grown to a taller height to provide full privacy up to 10′ – 12′ high.
Privacy Privet grows best in full sun to part shade, and generally does not have any disease or insect issues. Privet is an outstanding hedge plant and we are a big fan of them. They should be planted 12″ – 16″ apart. They are perfect for adding great privacy in between close driveways!
