Magnolia virginiana – Sweetbay Magnolia grows natively in the southeastern and mid-Atlantic states. In the northern range, it will grow as a 15-20′ tall tree in the PA area with a spreading, rounded crown, or as multi-stemmed. This beautiful and very intriguing tree produces a very sweet fragrance (lemony), 9 petal, creamy white, waxy flowers 3″- 4″ in diameter which appear in mid-spring and occasionally throughout the summer. Cone-like fruits with bright red seeds mature in fall and brilliant in their red color. It is deciduous, but sometimes keeps it leaves and does attract birds. USDA zones 5-9
