It blooms later than the Yoshino, Okame, and other flowering cherry trees, and has those amazing full large Pink flowers. Kwanzan Cherry is an outstanding double petal Japanese flowering cherry that is highly-prized, and well known for its profuse and showy pink spring bloom. It is considered to be one of the most ornamental of the flowering cherries. It can grow up to 20-25 feet tall and to 15-20 feet wide with a vase shape, ascending branching, and a spreading-rounded crown. It’s deep pink double flowers (to 2.5 inch diameter), each with 20-30 petals, bloom in pendant clusters of 2-5 in late April. Fall color is yellow to orange-bronze. In 1912, the people of Japan donated 12 different varieties of flowering cherry trees to the U. S. for planting in the Washington, D.C. area. From that original donation, the Kwanzan and Yoshino cherry were planted in the Tidal Basin in the East Potomac Park area. USDA zones 5-9

Native Trees
Amelanchier grandiflora, 'Autumn Brilliance'is a great native specimen producing white spring flowers and awesome fall colors for its multi-season display. These grow to 15' - 20' and are taller than wide. We grow single trunk specimens, but do have some multi-trunk as well. The Amelanchier looks great as a solo tree, or as part of a multi-specimen design. These are a truly very nice tree/ shrub and are fascination to see up close throughout the seasons. Autumn Brilliance puts on one of the best fall color displays of all of the serviceberry trees. It is a beautiful native flowering tree, and the birds love the berries that display in May/ June. It is a hard-to-find tree, and is also valuable as a wildlife tree because it attracts songbirds. It is also called June Berry, and has become one of our favorites.
