Kwanzan Cherry is an outstanding double petal Japanese flowering cherry that is highly-prized, and well known for its profuse and showy pink spring bloom. It is considered to be one of the most ornamental of the flowering cherries. It can grow up to 20-25 feet tall and to 15-20 feet wide with a vase shape, ascending branching, and a spreading-rounded crown. It’s deep pink double flowers (to 2.5 inch diameter), each with 20-30 petals, bloom in pendant clusters of 2-5 in late April. Fall color is yellow to orange-bronze. In 1912, the people of Japan donated 12 different varieties of flowering cherry trees to the U. S. for planting in the Washington, D.C. area. From that original donation, the Kwanzan and Yoshino cherry were planted in the Tidal Basin in the East Potomac Park area. USDA zones 5-9
